Most of the projects I have mostly been working on are gifts, so no pictures of those yet. I can share pictures of the yarns I recently spun.
Top skien is a handful of neutral samples nplyed together so it will stripe. I plan on making in to to this hat: Capucine. I recently cut most of my hair off and I want a warmer hat than what I have now. It’s getting cold out there.
Bottom skien is a a two ply of Corriedale Cross I dyed with Kool Aid and spun with silk sari threads. No project in mind for it yet. It’s pretty bulky and soft but I don’t wear a lot of pink. I might give it away.
This is spun from a Merino/Bamboo/Nylon blend I purchased from Llady Llama Co. It’s not spun as evenly as I wanted but I need more practice with slippery fibers. I wanted to try fractal spinning to change the order of the striping. I am looking forward to knitting this up once I pick a project.
Last spinning project is some singles photo bombed by Cyd:
I used a whole lot of samples to spin two bobbins of singles. I am thinking about plying it with grey commercial yarn and then knitting a huge wrap.
If you are wondering why I have some many fiber samples it’s because I sometimes buy the Phat Fiber box. Once a month there is a themed box available for purchase that has about 10-15 samples in it. I really enjoy getting to try a variety of fibers from a lot of different indie vendors. They do a lot of give aways on the blog too. My fiber stash consists is about 40% Phat fiber contributors, 50% from vendors I’ve checked out at festivals and 10% from my LYS.
Last post I mentioned I was spinning a lot, but I only showed one completed yarn. Well here is the rest:
Spun from an Eternal Love Art Yarn Kit from lanitium ex machina on etsy this is yarn has all of the things! Alpaca, silk, silk noil, tencel, soy, wool, wensleydale locks, firestar (in gold and copper), silk sari ribbon, sari silk threads, and thin glittery thread.
It was a lot of fun to spin. Yarn that contains so many ingredients will never be even, so I didn’t even try. I ended up with about 150yds that ranges in thickness from fingering to super bulky. This is the sort of yarn that makes my spinning wheel cry. My wheel will happily spin all the fine yarns I like, but it does not handle super bulky yarn that well.
Knitting with this will probably be a nightmare, so I might weave something with it instead.
This yarn only has some of the things – merino, bamboo, and angelina. Batt was from an etsy shop that doesn’t seem to exist any more.
I didn’t want an even thickness yarn with this either so it ranges from fingering to DK. There is approximately 320 yards of this. I have no clue what I am going to do with this. No ideas. If someone wants this yarn I will trade it for baked goods.
Both of these yarns contain massive amounts of sparkle goodness. This stuff is like glitter – it gets every where. I have been finding pieces of it at work.
In the last year, the Boston area has lost two yarn stores. A third is now up for sale (Mind’s Eye) and a fourth (Windsor Button) is now closing. New shops have opened in the area, but I am really going to miss Windsor Button. The staff is awesome, the selection was good and the prices were competitive. I have gone is a couple times to take advantage of the closing sales, but it felt a little bit like going to a wake.
My color choice this week reflects my mood. I spun most of my blue fiber samples into yarn:
Most of the samples are from Phat Fiber boxes:
- Giffordables – Blue Velvet
- Crochet by KA – Warp Core
- 6 Cats Knitting Around
- Heavenly Fiber – Bollywood sample?
- Heavenly Fiber – Snow Queen
- Woolie Bullie – Blue Morpho
- Felting Sunshine – Avatar Blend
- Rebel Yarns – Blue Portal
- Some random locks from the stash, I am not sure of the source.
I did not have as many blue samples as I did reds and pink so I spun up some blue merino I had in my stash to ply it with. I ended up with about 300 yards of fingering weight yarn. I think I might use this to knit a wingspan.
I have been hoarding fiber samples. In an attempt to spin down my stash I grabbed a bunch that all had pink or red in them and spun them up and made really colorful yarn:
The samples are:
- Silver Sun Aplacas – Silver Sun’s Bollywood
- Lady Llama fiber Co
- Spincereley yours – Kali
- Heavenly Fiber – Kaylee’s Dress
- By Rebekah with Love – Ultra Violet
- Expertly Dyed – Hot Little Sari
- Spin Up Gil Fibers – Lady Lotus
- Corgi Hill Farm – BFL Silk
- Prancing Pixel – Bollyworld Wedding: Day 1
- Girl Meets Spindle – Syrah
- WC Mercantile – Rachael Batt
- Spin Up Girl Fibers – Squished Trish
- Lanitium ex Machine – Bollywood art yarn kit
I ended up with about 110 yards of worsted weight yarn. I am going to do this next with all the blue samples I have.
